PRESS RELEASE
In honor of the Philippines’ second saint, Eastwood Mall proudly hosts the Pedro Calungsod Art Exhibit on October 22 – 24 at the Eastwood Mall Atrium.
The opening of the exhibit comes at the heels of Calungsod’s canonization, which is scheduled on October 21. The exhibit collects over 60 paintings and artwork from highly skilled Angono artists, who have interpreted Calungsod’s likeness and showed him doing his missionary work in the Marianas Islands.
Even though he was only a teenager, Pedro Calungsod already showed his willingness to devote his life to God. Leaving family and friends behind, he went with the Spanish Jesuit missionaries to the Ladrones Islands in the Western North Pacific, braving all sorts of difficulties – from the strange terrain to devastating typhoons – to spread the Christian Faith to the Chamorros.
While they met some success in converting some of the natives, others were jealous of their success and began to persecute them. When Pedro and the superior of the Mission, Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores, were attacked by the natives, Pedro stood his ground, sacrificing his life to help protect his superior rather than running to safety. He was only 17 when he died.
“Megaworld is honored to be hosting this exhibit dedicated to Pedro Calungsod. He is an inspiration to the Filipino youth and a shining example for Christians all over the world. We hope that through this exhibit, more people will be able to discover the life of Pedro Calungsod and draw strength and encouragement from his example,” said Kevin L. Tan, First Vice President and Commercial Division Head of Megaworld Corporation.
The theme of the exhibit is the “Evangelizing Presence of Filipinos in the World.” While the paintings display the artists’ individual styles and skills, all of them express Calungsod’s Filipino-ness and his dynamism.
