How to be Inspired by a Mid-life Crisis
Many people experience unexpected feelings
during the transitions that often occur in midlife. Although some of these
emotions may be uncomfortable, you can think of them as a flag waving to get
your attention. Midlife is a wonderful time to re-evaluate your values and
priorities and determine which situations in your life are serving you well,
and which ones need to be changed. You might not have the same goals at age 50
as you did 25 years ago.

Think of it as an opportunity
You may experience doubt and discomfort with the life you currently are living. Take a pause and think about the things that matter to you most. Does your daily schedule reflect these priorities? If not, how can you bring it more in line? Now is the time to try new things and set new goals. Is there a hobby you’ve been curious about? Sign up for a class. Learning something new, whether it’s badminton, calligraphy, genealogy or something else can have many beneficial effects. Have you always wanted to see more of the world? Plan a trip. You can start locally with a day trip and work up to planning longer excursions. You might want to spend more time outdoors, which could be combined with a hobby or an exercise program. Is your work fulfilling? Are there health issues you need to address? Ask yourself these questions and make a list of answers. These notes can guide you to some fruitful exploration.
Reconnect
with people
Over time we all lose touch with some of the
people in our lives. The re-evaluation of your situation may prompt you to reconnect with friends or family members.
Sometimes a simple Google search will help you locate folks, and there are
other resources, too. Look online for a search engine that can help you find your former classmates when you type in
the city, state, school name, and graduation year - you can even look up a
specific classmate by name. Social media sites may be helpful with this too.
Making conscious decisions about who you want to spend time with can
dramatically improve the quality of your life. If a close friend or relative is
far away, you might enjoy planning a trip to spend time with them.
Reconsider
your career choices
Work is a significant part of life, and
periodically re-evaluating your career goals, choices, and path can be helpful.
The job that was once fulfilling may no longer be a good fit, but before
quitting, make some plans. If you want to start your own business, a good bit of
research should be done first. If you simply want a different job in your
chosen field, then it’s time to network with your contacts and update your
resume. Many free online resume templates can help you to create and
personalize your resume so it best represents you and your goals.

While a mid-life crisis can be very
uncomfortable, it can also be the impetus for positive change. For many it
becomes an opportunity to address neglected health and fitness concerns, pursue
their curiosity and try new hobbies, travel, reconnect with old friends, or
find a new job or career path. While none of these things will happen
instantly, the planning and pursuit of them can be rewarding. In the big
picture, a mid-life crisis can be a fantastic opportunity to do a reset on
various areas of your life.
